Global Innovation Index 2019 published

World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO together with their collaboration partners have published the largest worldwide study of innovation in 2019. It’s interesting to see that the global R&D expenditures are growing faster than the global economy, and for the first time in this millenium a gap between GDP growth and R&D growth has emerged.

This gap emerges at the same time as China now is producing the equivalent innovation output of Germany, the UK, Finland, Israel, and the US combined – but with considerably lower levels of input.

The report speculates that we maybe soon will see an increase in protectionism in technology-intensive sectors. The ongoing US-China trade war could point in this direction.
