Simplifying complexity: The EPO member states are making it easier for companies and inventors

In 2019, the EPO launched the convergence programme as part of its Strategic Plan 2023. The “Convergence of Practise” programme focuses on establishing common practises between the EPO and the national patent offices of the EPO member states in six areas.

The first two areas – examination of unity of invention and designation of the inventor – were approved by member states at a meeting of the EPO’s Administrative Council in December 2020 and are now being implemented with the aim of reducing costs and increasing efficiency for the companies operating internationally.

The six areas for convergence of practices were chosen jointly by the national patent offices, the EPO, and representatives of the industries as well as the IP profession. These areas were believed to deliver the biggest improvements for users and for the patent offices.
